Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon has been convicted of identity fraud and sentenced to 4 months and 24 days in prison on Thursday.
Faris was convicted of identity theft after Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) accused him of using their flag and logo without the party’s permission.
The verdict hearing was held at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Although Faris was sentenced to prison, he would not lose his seat at parliament but would not be allowed to attend sessions for the duration of the sentence. He had been sentenced after being kept in detention for 11 months.
Faris was also charged with offering bribes to fellow MPs. However Faris has repeatedly denied the charges against him at court.
Faris’ prison sentence had come after his father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, also received a prison sentenced on June 13, when he was convicted of the obstruction of justice charge against him in the aftermath of the Supreme Court order on February 1.
