Jumhooree Party (JP)’s deputy leader Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has been appointed as the authority to temporarily carry out party leader duties if there is no one in the leader position.
Dr. Hussain Rasheed, appointed as JP’s deputy leader for the third term, was appointed the responsibilities at the party’s 116th National Steering Committee meeting held on Thursday night.
Speaking to VNews, JP’s Chief Spokesperson Ali Solih said the council deliberated the issue at length before reaching a decision. At the 3rd National Congress of JP, it was decided that one of the deputy leaders would be assigned all the duties and authority given to the leader, in the absence of the party leader.
Council Member Mahmood Rameez recommended Dr. Hussain Rasheed’s name, which was supported by Aishath Nahula, Qasim Ibrahim’s wife and the Council Member who was elected with the most votes. The decision was reached unanimously with 36 votes.
The party leader position is currently vacant as neither Qasim nor any other individual ran for the leader position this time, hence the decision was made to temporarily transfer all responsibilities of the leader to the deputy leader.
Ali Solih also said that members proposed to establish several committees in the meeting, including 22 policy committees and 6 administrative committees.
Aishath Nahula proposed to form a special committee to make independent institutions accountable. Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain supported the suggestion, which was then passed with majority votes of council members.
Thus, it was decided to form 29 committees with seven members in each committee.
Ali Solih further said the committees formed by JP will be carrying out important work, while 203 individuals would be given the opportunity to partake in it. Hence, this is a golden opportunity to serve the country and move forward in the political arena. The opportunity to apply to the committees would be soon opened, so JP desires all the youth and academic individuals to make good use of this opportunity, he said.
