Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been named the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.
Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was awarded the party ticket at the party’s ongoing 3rd National Congress at AA. Ukulhas.
The decision came after the party’s President Mohamed Nasheed opted to forfeit his candidacy. When the floor was opened to submit a name that would compete in Nasheed’s stead, Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam submitted Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s name, receiving resounding applause from congress participants.
As no other name was submitted, and the PG leader received support of the members of congress with 791 votes in his favour, he was named as Nasheed’s replacement for the presidential election.
Meanwhile the joint opposition had agreed that their chosen candidate to run for President would be MDP’s candidate while the candidate to run for Vice-President would be selected from Jumhooree Party.
The decision to choose their PG leader as the presidential candidate came after the party amended its charter to allow the party congress to award its presidential ticket without a second primary, in the case their first primary winner forfeited his candidacy or was barred from competing.
