Housing minister Dr. Mohamed Muizz says the bridge being developed between Male’ and Hulhule’ will be unveiled before the end of August.
Noting that the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge will be completed ahead of schedule, minister said July 9 would be written down in golden ink as the momentous day when the joining of the two ends of the bridge is completed.
“The work on the bridge is being completed faster than agreed upon and the quality is also being monitored well. The government is carrying out the work very responsibly. From next Monday, the finishing touches would be put on the completion of the bridge”, minister said.
Dr. Muizz said that the government had never declared July 26 as the opening day of the bridge, although the bridge’s contractor China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) informed that the bridge could be completed by that date. The government also did not instruct the company to complete the bridge by that date, he said.
Furthermore, he said, the agreement states that the bridge should be completed by September 25. However due to the efficient and quick work carried out by the company, the work is being completed ahead of schedule. The company is the world’s number one is bridge construction, minister said.
To organize the bridge’s opening ceremony, Dr. Muizz had travelled to China early May this year.
The bridge will be 2 kilometers long and 20.3 meters wide and will allow vessels as high as 12 meters to travel beneath it while its highest region will measure about 20 meters, he said.
The Maldivian government also said that USD 126 million out of the total USD 210 million is set to be given as free aid by the Chinese government.
