Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s presidential candidate President Abdulla Yameen has chosen former Islamic minister and Chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed as his running mate.
President Yameen announced the decision at the PPM council meeting on Saturday night. With the announcement, PPM’s Parliamentary Group leader Nihan Hussain Manik, senior party members and council members announced the same on social media, congratulating Dr. Shaheem.
President Yameen chose Dr. Mohamed Jameel as his running mate in 2013, who later carried out an exemplary campaign to bring him to power. Although President Yameen did not visit many islands as the presidential candidate, Dr. Jameel visited all the islands, sometimes more than once, campaigning for him.
However, in the early days of the current administration a baseless allegation was made against Dr. Jameel and a no-confidence motion was filed against him at the parliament by PPM’s parliamentary group. After bringing some swift amendments to the parliament laws and without giving Dr. Jameel an opportunity to respond to the allegation, he was stripped off the Vice President position.
After that the tourism minister of that time, Ahmed Adeeb was chosen as the Vice President. However in 2015 Adeeb was blamed for the explosion on the presidential speedboat, arrested and detained in prison. Then, PPM’s PG filed a no-confidence motion against Adeeb and expelled him from the Vice President position as well.
President Yameen’s current running mate is former finance minister Abdulla Jihad.
