The government has allowed the opposition alliance to use Dharubaaruge for their upcoming meeting next Friday, after denying them the use of any location in Male’ for months.
Housing ministry’s media consultant Ahmed Fazaal said they have decided to allow the opposition to use the Rannabandeyri Maalan of Dharubaaruge and informed Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of their decision. The opposition had initially requested to use the Carnival region, however they were denied due to the construction of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, he said.
Fazaal said they have been informed of the availability of Rannabandeyri Maalan and been ordered to settle the payment before Friday.
The decision comes after months of denying the opposition to rent out any building or location in Male’ for their events. Meanwhile the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has been carrying out their events at Dharubaaruge and Carnival region at their convenience, employing the police to close off roads for party events.
However, the police had repeatedly obstructed the opposition from carrying out any of their events. They also used undue force to stop opposition events, arresting many on the crack down.
The housing ministry had previously disallowed Jumhooree Party (JP) and MDP to hold their congress in Male’, due to which JP held their congress at Paradise Island Resort, while MDP held theirs at AA. Ukulhas.
