Maldives Transport Authority has issued a warning that the licenses of taxis charging citizens more than the regulated cab fare will be annulled.
Transport Authority had published the amended fare rates for taxis on Sunday.
With the opening of Sinamale’ bridge on Friday, taxis began carrying passengers from Male’ to Hulhumale’, charging them at a whim with cab fares ranging from MVR 150 and MVR 250.
Although Transport Authority had fixed the rate from Male’ to Hulhumale’ at MVR 40, taxis have continued charging MVR 100 per trip, stating that they cannot travel for the rate fixed by the authority.
Meanwhile taxi drivers have raised concern and voiced displeasure over the issue, stating that Transport Authority fixed the rate without even consulting the taxi centres.
