A test flight has landed at the newly built airport at HDh. Kulhudhuffushi’s reclaimed land on Wednesday.
The tourism minister Moosa Zameer, Attorney General Mohamed Anil, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Parliamentary Group leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam and some senior government officials along with government affiliated company heads had travelled to Kulhudhuffushi on Maldivian airline’s test flight.
South Kulhudhuffushi MP Mohamed Nasheed and residents of the island were gathered to welcome the guests.
The test flight left Velana International Airport at 2:20 p.m. and landed at Kulhudhuffushi airport at 3:10 p.m.
Although the test flight landed at the island, only the construction of the runway has been completed so far. The tar was laid out and completed on the runway, measuring 1200 meters in length and 30 meters in width, last Sunday.
Building an airport at Kulhudhuffushi within two years of being sworn into office was one of the pledges made by President Abdulla Yameen during his presidential campaign in 2013. However, due to various difficulties the work on the airport actively began on November 12 last year.
A vast area of the island’s mangrove and lagoon was reclaimed to build the airport, while the 18 houses occupied by island residents were also evicted and the residents housed elsewhere for the development of the airport.
