Elections Commission (EC) has decided to annul the decisions made at Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s congress held last Friday.
EC’s decision not to endorse PPM’s congress comes whilst former President and PPM’s founder Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had requested EC to nullify the party congress.
In a tweet on Wednesday, EC announced that their members have unanimously decided not to accept the decisions made at PPM’s congress as the event was held against EC regulations.
During the rushed, closed door congress held by PPM on Friday, President Abdulla Yameen was elected as the party President while heads of senior positions and council members were elected.
Four vice presidents were also elected including Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla and tourism minister Moosa Zameer, economic minister Mohamed Saeed, and legal affairs minister at the President’s Office Aishath Azima Shakoor.
Meanwhile Yumna Maumoon, daughter of PPM's elected leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, sought to halt the party congress meeting. However Civil Court did not respond to the appeal.
