Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has returned to the Maldives on Thursday.
Qasim was welcomed at Velana International Airport by President elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his running mate Faisal Naseem, along with senior members of the opposition parties and Qasim’s family members.
Qasim travelled abroad for medical treatment on the night of September 6, 2017. He first travelled to Singapore and then left to Germany for further treatment.
Qasim was sentenced to three years, two months and twelve days in prison on bribery charge in absentia close to midnight on August 24, 2017. He was admitted at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after collapsing inside the courtroom earlier that day.
Qasim decided to return to the country after High Court released him on bail on September 30.
Qasim was accompanied by JP President Ali Waheed, who had been living in the United Kingdom since his release after being arrested in relation to the May Day rally in 2015.
Qasim was also warmly welcomed by hundreds of supporters when he reached the capital Male’ City.
