Jailed former defence minister Colonel Mohamed Nazim has left to Malaysia for medical treatment on Thursday night.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) granted Nazim medical treatment abroad at the request of the medical board.
A family member informed VNews that Nazim left for Malaysia to treat a vein related issue in his leg. Nazim was given 30 days for treatment, the family member said.
Nazim had also previously sought treatment for deteriorating eyesight various times in the capital.
Nazim was unanimously found guilty of smuggling weapons by the three-judge bench and sentenced to 11 years in prison on March 27, 2015.
Nazim’s family had repeatedly requested Supreme Court to re-investigate his case, as police admitted the finger prints found on the pistol in Nazim’s room belonged to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
