Jumhooree Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim’s wife Aishath Nahula thanked the people of the country for Qasim’s safe return, stating that it was the people who enabled this.
Qasim’s youngest wife and JP council member, Aishath Nahula said the Maldivian people have brought Qasim back to his children and family.
Qasim was welcomed at Velana International Airport (VIA) by President elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his running mate Faisal Naseem, along with senior members of the opposition parties and Qasim’s family members.
Qasim has returned to the country after 1 year and 26 days in self-exile, when President Abdulla Yameen lost his influence on independent institutions with his defeat at the presidential elections this year.
Qasim travelled abroad for medical treatment on the night of September 6, 2017. He first travelled to Singapore and then left to Germany for further treatment.
Qasim was sentenced to three years, two months and twelve days in prison on bribery charge in absentia close to midnight on August 24, 2017. He was admitted at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after collapsing inside the courtroom earlier that day.
Qasim decided to return to the country after High Court released him on bail on September 30.
Aishath Nahula, who had actively campaigned for the opposition alliance, described Qasim’s return as a happy occasion for his family and the whole country.
“A government run by the coalition chosen by the people will undoubtedly be just and fair. We assure you of this”, she said.
Qasim was also warmly welcomed by hundreds of supporters when he reached the capital Male’ City.
