President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is set to take his presidential oath at the National Football Stadium.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef, who is heading the committee tasked with preparing Solih’s inauguration ceremony, in an interview given to RajjeTV said that the National Football Stadium was chosen as the venue for the inauguration ceremony to enable the greatest number of people to take part in the historic event.
It is Solih’s desire to have as many people as possible partake in the event and the stadium has room to accommodate 90,000 – 10,000 people, he said.
“We have decided to hold the event at the National Football Stadium as it can accommodate a vast number of people. With the rows of steps and chairs, it has room for 90,000 – 10,000 people. We wish to see as many people as possible take part in this event”, Hassan Latheef said.
He also said foreign leaders and prominent members of the international community will also be invited to the event. These include country leaders, foreign ministers, foreign mission heads, ambassadors and high commissioners, he said.
“While the invitee list is large, we are trying to open the opportunity for all who want to participate in the event to do so”, the committee head said.
He further said that they will be sending invitations to about 150 countries which the Maldives has established diplomatic ties with.
“We have established ties with 150 countries, and all of these countries will be invited to the ceremony. Some countries have even enquired via email, phone calls and messages when their invite will be sent. We will meet with the foreign ministry and begin sending invites to these countries in the coming week through the ministry”, Hassan Latheef said.
