The United States (US) Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, congratulated president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his electoral win, during a phone call on Friday.
According to the president-elect’s office, the US Secretary congratulated Solih for the recent electoral win and discussed the procedures regarding the transfer of power.
He also discussed the various ways the US and the Maldives can cooperate once Solih assumes office.
A statement released by the US Department of State on Friday stated that the US Secretary congratulates the Maldivian people for voting in overwhelming numbers despite the obstacles. Also, the poll result shows the will of the people, hence, all parties should respect the result of the presidential election, it said.
Meanwhile the Spokesperson of the US Department of State, Heather Nauert, released a press statement on September 24, congratulating Solih on his win and the Maldivian people for their resounding participation in the voting process. This has paved the path to a new chapter in the country’s history, the statement read.
The statement further said that the US expects all parties to respect the will of the people and support a peaceful transition of power in the November 17 inauguration.
“The US stands ready to work closely with the next Maldivian government to expand cooperation on our shared interests in an independent and prosperous Maldives as well as a free and open Indian Ocean region”, the Spokesperson said.
