Former President Mohamed Nasheed says no discussions regarding President Abdulla Yameen took place during his trip to Saudi Arabia.
Nasheed said this via Twitter after his trip to Saudi Arabia on the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. After his trip to Saudi Arabia, Nasheed had return to the United Kingdom (UK).
In the tweet on Wednesday, Nasheed stated that the Saudi King had assured that they would always seek to work with the government in power. There was no mention of President Yameen during the discussion, he said.
During his trip to Saudi Arabia, Nasheed was accompanied by former foreign minister Mohamed Naseem.
Nasheed’s trip comes at a time when many worldwide have been criticizing Saudi Arabia after Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi was allegedly killed at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
However, a statement released by Maldives' Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 15 stated that the government of Maldives reaffirms its solidarity with the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
“The Government of Maldives strongly rejects any attempts to undermine the sovereignty of any country, whether by threatening to impose sanctions or by putting political pressure towards reaching a political objective. In this regard, the Government of Maldives supports the statement issued by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 14 October 2018”, the statement read.
Saudi Arabia also issued a statement on Wednesday, stating that they would take greater action against any country that takes action against Saudi Arabia.
