Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has resigned from the party’s Parliamentary Group (PG) leader position.
Qasim announced the decision while speaking at a press conference held at M. Kunooz on Monday, after former defence minister Colonel Mohamed Naazim signed for the party.
Qasim said he resigned from the position because he was elected as the Speaker of Parliament.
He said all the MPs of the party support appointing JP’s former deputy leader and Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz as the party’s new PG leader. The meeting to appoint Riyaz for the position was not held on Monday due to a shortage of time, Qasim said.
The PG leader position of the party has been held by Qasim till date.
Qasim was elected as the parliament speaker with 61 votes after former Speaker Abdulla Maseeh resigned from the position.
The first parliament session since Qasim’s appointment was held on Monday.
