Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed and Faresmaathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef have joined Jumhooree Party (JP) on Wednesday.
The duo signed for the party at a special ceremony held at JP’s main office this afternoon.
After signing, they presented the membership form to the party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim. This is the second time MP Ilham has signed for JP.
After signing, MP Ilham said it was a happy and important day in his political life. He said although he had left JP to join Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), he had never been far from JP. Since the change was made after discussing with Qasim, both Qasim and former President Abdulla Yameen are the people aware of the reasons behind the change. It is not easy to share these details with the media, he said.
MP Ilham also said that while he was with PPM, he tried hard to put a halt to all the disruptions Yameen was causing to Qasim and his business. As Qasim was being harmed via the government, he had disclosed the information to Qasim and had discussions with him on many fronts, he said.

Meanwhile MP Latheef stated that he is one who prefers discussion before attempting to solve any issue. As such, he served the last president sincerely, while enduring the many obstacles that the government had faced, both internally and from outside, he said.
He said when he joined PPM, the party was run by both Yameen and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. However, the current situation of the country and the vague leadership of PPM led him to join JP, he said.
Speaking at the ceremony, Qasim said changing one’s perspective with the changes in the country’s condition is not an issue.
The party’s president Ali Waheed also stated that JP will always welcome members that wish to serve the people.
