Former defence minister Colonel Mohamed Nazim said VMedia played an important role in enabling him to be with his family and the people of the country, after a long time in incarceration.
Colonel Nazim said this while speaking to the staff of VMedia during a visit to the station on Wednesday.
Colonel Nazim said during the three years and ten months he spent in prison, VMedia’s VTV and VFM were his closest companions. Describing the feeling of visiting the station, he said visiting VMedia feels like meeting his family. VMedia staff had worked tirelessly to inform the people of the injustice he had faced, he said.
Colonel Nazim thanked the management and staff of VMedia, stating that their role in his freedom had been paramount.
“Truth is, I am currently standing in front of you due to VMedia and its programs, especially “Fasmanzaru” program, where presenters frequently spoke about the injustice I faced. The repeated mentioning of my case is the reason why I can freely be with my family and the Maldivian people today”, Colonel Nazim said.
He further said that all journalists had worked in dangerous waters the last few years. However the work done by VMedia, without fear or hesitation, is commendable, he said.
Colonel Nazim said VMedia also played an important role in the success of the opposition alliance in the last presidential election by portraying the truth and keeping the masses updated on the situation of the country.
He said he will always be with VMedia and will assist the station in any way he is capable.
VMedia’s director general Imad Latheef said former defence minister’s visit to VMedia was a happy occasion. His support and encouragement towards the staff gave reinforcement to continue working with more determination, he said.
Imad also stated that previously journalists had sometimes felt they will never be given due recognition, but Colonel Nazim had proved this assumption wrong.
During his visit, Colonel Nazim enjoyed an evening tea with the staff and took photographs with them.
