The parliament’s budget committee, on Friday night, has evaluated and approved MVR 30.25 billion as the state budget for 2019.
After evaluating the recommendations put forth regarding the budget, the budget for 2019 was passed unanimously by the members of the committee.
The initial budget proposed to the parliament was MVR 29.6 billion. After evaluation, the committee increased the amount by MVR 600 million and passed the budget at MVR 30.25, the biggest budget set by the country till date.
The estimated state income for 2019 when the budget was proposed was MVR 23 billion and the budget was passed after estimating the state income to be MVR 23.3 billion.
After approving the budget, committee chair and Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef said their report will be submitted to the parliament floor on Sunday.
While this marks the first state budget since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took oath, some of his pledges were included in the budget.
Finance minister Ibrahim Ameer had also informed the budget committee that their plan is to submit a supplementary budget, which would include all of the presidential pledges, mid-year during 2019. However, the decision has not yet been finalized, he said.
The minister also stated that all ongoing projects would also be included in next year’s budget.
