Jumhooree Party (JP) said their leader and Speaker of Parliament Qasim Ibrahim neither has nor will ever obstruct former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb from receiving a constitutional right.
JP said this after rumors spread on social media, accusing their leader of obstructing Adeeb from being transferred to house arrest.
Speaking to VNews on Sunday, JP’s spokesperson Ali Solih said some are spreading false rumors against Qasim, accusing him of influencing authorities to keep Adeeb from being transferred home.
Ali Solih said Qasim has never obstructed Adeeb or any other individual from receiving a constitutional right, and he would never do so in the future. Qasim has not hindered Adeeb from receiving medical care or being transferred home, he said.
Ali Solih further stated that Qasim has always acted within the law and had even previously voiced out against the injustices meted out to the former VP.
“There is no truth to the rumors some people are spreading on social media”, Ali Solih said.
Since Qasim is the Speaker of Parliament, he cannot influence the prisons or the inmates. However, as the JP leader had spent time in incarceration he is aware of the condition of the prisons and its inmates and their constituted rights. Thus, he will do everything in his power to solve these issues, Ali Solih said.
Due to Adeeb’s medical condition Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has also ordered Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) to transfer him to house arrest. However, MCS had not responded to HRCM’s order regarding Adeeb so far, his family said.
HRCM’s order to transfer Adeeb to house arrest came after doctors advised him to be transferred home to the care of his family for three weeks, following a kidney operation at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Adeeb was admitted and had been receiving treatment at IGMH since November 9.
