North Fuvahmulah MP Ali Shah and Th. Guraidhoo MP Hussain Manik Dhon Manik have joined Jumhooree Party on Tuesday night.
Both MPs signed the membership form and joined the party during a ceremony held at the party’s main office at M. Kunooz last night.
Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, senior members and parliamentary group members took part in the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony MP Shah said although he signed for JP, he has joined the coalition and will work for the reform work initiated by the allied four parties. Since it is necessary to join one party in order to work for the coalition, the decision to join JP was reached due to the utmost trust in the party and what the party stands for, he said.
Guraidhoo MP Hussain Manik Dhon Manik said he believes future success lies with the coalition alliance, which JP is party to. Noting that Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has no future in politics, he said the last five years were spent working for the betterment of the people through the ruling party, however the result had been bitter. Thus, joining JP will provide a better opportunity to work towards a common goal, and he will continue to work with the leadership of JP to develop the party and work with the coalition, he said.
Speaking at the ceremony, the party’s parliamentary group leader Abdulla Riyaz said the party and its leader always welcome discussion, although it may defer from what he stands for. Being appointed as the party’s PG leader is proof of this fact, as he had been one of those that frequently proposes opposing arguments to the leader, Riyaz said.
With the latest members, JP currently has 18 members of the party in the parliament.
