Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has decided to gift tickets to 24 of its MPs for the upcoming parliamentary elections, without holding a primary.
The decision was announced was PPM’s President Abdulla Yameen during a press conference held at the party’s main office on Monday.
This is the first time former President Abdulla Yameen met the media after concluding his term at office.
Yameen said the democratic move would be to hold a primary, however some members were gifted the ticket due to their sincerity in serving the party. Some members had to go for a primary because there were others contesting them in their constituency, he said.
Noting that a disadvantage of holding a primary is the losing candidate refusing to support the winning one, Yameen said some tickets were gifted to members as the party charter allows it.
He further said that PPM is the hope for the nation, which was shown in the last five years where the country witnessed a boom of development. Hence, it is his wish that votes be cast in favour of PPM members that got the ticket and are selected to be given the ticket in the upcoming parliament elections, Yameen said.
When questioned whether PPM members would contest in all constituencies, Yameen said they would be contesting in most of them. Since PPM is attempting to win the parliament seats, tickets would be given to individuals worthy of the responsibility, he said.
Responding to a question enquiring whether he would contest in the parliament elections, the former president said he had not yet reached a decision regarding the matter.
Stating that no bill, which would burden the people, had been passed during his tenure when PPM had parliament majority, Yameen said that he still believes the anti-defamation bill is justified as he believes defaming someone’s character is a crime.
Yameen further said the bill limiting the age gap from 30 to 65 years for those contesting presidency should be intact, as he believes it enhances the chance for younger and academically capable individuals to contest in this nation where the level of educated individuals are ever increasing.
