Maldives Transport Authority has commenced a forum to obtain suggestions from the public regarding the taxi fares in the greater Male’ region.
The public consultation forum was held during Tuesday night, where discussions regarding the current taxi fares were carried out, after which the forum was then opened online to the public on Wednesday morning.
The pubic were asked whether they prefer meters in the taxis, online payment or a set rate as fare for each trip. In addition to this, they were also asked regarding their preferred fare inside Male’; MVR 20, MVR 25 or an amount higher than that.
The form also inquired whether the current taxi fares taken for trips from Male’ – Hulhumale’ and Male’ – Hulhule’ were acceptable. It also included MVR 35, MVR 50, MVR 60, or more as choices which can be selected for trips from Male’ to Hulhule’, while the same was asked for trips from Male’ to Hulhumale’ with fares at MVR 40, MVR 55, MVR 75 or more.
Many other inquiries were included in the form, seeking to get public feedback regarding the way taxis are being operated in the region. Concern had sparked from the public for the hefty MVR 100 fare charged by cab drivers to cross the highway, leading to debate between taxi drivers and the general public.
