Deputy Speaker of Parliament Moosa Manik has decided not to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
He announced the decision via a tweet on Friday.
The tweet featured a photo showing the four coalition leaders, Chief Justice and Moosa Manik, taken after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inaugural address at the opening of the Parliament for 2019.
Moosa Manik stated that he had served in the parliament for a long period and the decision not to contest in the upcoming election revolves around his desire to spend more time with family and business.
Moosa Manik secured the Hulhuhenveiru seat at the Parliament through Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s ticket. He, however, later changed to Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). With the defeat suffered by President Abdulla Yameen at the latest Presidential elections, Moosa Manik and PPM had been at odds.
When the party announced their chosen candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections, Moosa Manik was not included in the list and he had later announced he would independently contest for the Gan Constitueny.
