President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inaugural address at the opening of the Parliament this year was one filled with hope and optimism for the nation, says Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
In a statement released by the party, MDP said the address given by President Solih was one that renewed hope in the hearts of the people, as it addressed all key issues faced by the country and how to tackle it, as outlined in the party’s manifesto. The strategies outlined by the President, to battle these issues will undoubtedly bring forth a positive change for the people of the country, the statement read.
MDP said in his address, President Solih outlined reforming the judiciary, strengthening independent institutions, protecting and preserving the sovereignty and independence of the nation, and ensuring the rights and basic needs of the people. He also assured that battling corruption and theft will be prioritized, MDP said.
The President also highlighted increasing the income of the people and economic development, overhauling the Tax System and introduction of a progressive income tax, determining a minimum wage to allow an increase in living standard, providing an allowance for those seeking jobs, and establishing housing and shelter for all.
Other policies of the government include tuition-free first degrees in the country and low interest rates for those studying abroad while extending the repaying period; all of which will facilitate and provide ease for students and parents. Thus blossoming hope in the hearts of the people towards a brighter future, MDP said.
