The President’s Office has placed Chairman of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and former Vice Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ahmed Mausoom on suspension this Wednesday.
The suspension order came in relation to funds deposited in two companies where Mausoom holds shares. The investigation following the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement scandal showed USD 6.1 million (MVR 93.5 million) deposited into these two companies by SOF Private Limited – the company indicted of laundering the embezzled funds.
The Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Hoodh informed VNews that Mausoom was ordered to be kept in suspension pending the investigation into the MMPRC embezzlement case as two companies where he is shareholder has been indicted of the scandal in the report released by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Hoodh further stated that the President has placed four individuals on suspension in relation to the case. These include youth minister Ahmed Mahloof, planning ministry’s state minister Akram Kamaaluddin, and Island Aviation Services (IAC)’s board member Abdulla Azim.
While Mausoom has been placed on suspension, VNews understands he has been one of the main funders of MDP since the establishment of the party.
