Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC) has held an awareness program aimed to familiarize their drivers with the laws and regulations governing land transportation in the country.
Police said the program initiated by the company was held in collaboration with Maldives Police Service (MPS).
Information regarding the importance of traffic rules and road safety will be discussed during the three-day workshop, police said.
Police also informed that a total of 60 drivers from MTCC will be taking part in the program.
The awareness program comes at a time when a Ukranian woman lost her life after being run over by an MTCC bus, when the driver dozed off at the wheel. This incident was followed by another accident, where an MTCC bus collided with a car.
MTCC said while the accident where the tourist lost her life is distressing, they have always taken extra measures to ensure such accidents do not happen.
Speaking to VNews, MTCC’s CEO Hassan Shah said the buses operated by MTCC can only reach 50km/h speeds. This is also an extra measure taken to keep such tragic accidents from occurring, he said.
