Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested an alleged sex offender in the midst of his ‘walk of shame’ on Sunday, in connection with the case of sexually assaulting two young boys.
Police confirmed that a case of sexual assault against two minors was reported to them around 1:00 a.m. on May 23. While police took the case very seriously, no arrests were made at the time of reporting the incident.
According to police, they arrested a 19-year-old suspect on May 24, after obtaining an arrest warrant from the court at 2:48 a.m. early Sunday morning. The suspect was taken into custody for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy.
Before the police could arrest the suspect, a group of locals had apprehended him and questioned him. Upon questioning, the suspect confessed to molesting the two boys, stating that he had molested them on four different days. The group then stripped him of his clothes and made him walk the streets in his underwear.

While cases of child sexual abuse have been on the rise, statistics of Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services for April showed that most of the reported cases were various forms of assaults against children.
