Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been elected the Speaker of Parliament with a vast majority on Tuesday night.
Central Machchangoalhi MP Mohamed Nasheed was elected Parliament Speaker after receiving 67 votes, while his contender Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim received 17 votes.
While 85 members participated in the vote, one vote was declared void, rendering the total number of valid votes to be 84.
The voting process was headed by a five-member committee consisting of Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain, Isdhoo MP Ali Hameed, Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed, and Villingili MP Saud Hussain.
Upon being elected as Speaker of Parliament, the Parliament had announced it and congratulated Nasheed on the historic win. Congratulations have been pouring in for Nasheed by MPs, ministers and the public since the announcement.
