The council of Laamu Atoll Dhanbidhoo has announced that power has been restored to the island after the blackout on Friday night, although the solution is still temporary.
Speaking to VNews, President of Dhanbidhoo council Hussain Ashraf informed that the island suffered a blackout on Friday night, after a fire broke out in the powerhouse.
He said that power was restored around 5:45 a.m. Saturday morning, although there have been regular power failures yesterday due to the damages sustained by the generators in the powerhouse.
Ashraf said that the generator that caught fire has been damaged beyond repair, while two other generators were damaged in the incident. He said that the council is working to bring in a new generator to the island. He also said that the council is working to fix the issue of power failures that have been occurring regularly all day.
According to the Dhanbidhoo council, the fire incident occurred right after the generator was turned on following an overhaul.
