Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group and Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim has stated that government payouts are an increasing form of theft.
Azim said this in a series of tweets posted on his account.
He clarified that he was not talking about those who are seeking compensation on just grounds.
The PG leader of the political party with super majority in the parliament did not disclose further details regarding the matter.
Responding to the tweet, MDP's South Henveiru MP Hussain Shaheem concurred with Ali Azim. Hussain Shaheem also stated that the authority of the government has to be secured for the welfare of the people.
Ali Azim has received criticism for his tweets from people who noted that multiple companies have filed in court to get compensation payouts from the government during the current presidency.
The Supreme Court's verdict backing the MVR 348 million payout to Dheebaja Investment Private Limited as compensation for the cancellation of a contract to provide ferry service in the Northern Province was highlighted as well.
In addition, there have been recent reports that Newport View Restaurant has not paid rent because the government owes payments to the company.
