Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon has criticized the Indian government's policies regarding the occupation of Kashmir.
She questioned whether this was the democracy India proudly promotes in her tweet, while the Maldivian government has yet to criticize or comment on the recent clampdown in Kashmir.
Dunya expressed concerns over the internet lockdown and embargo in the region of Jammu and Kashmir which has resulted in people dying due to hunger and lack of medical supplies.
The Maldivian government has not commented on the clampdowns in Kashmir positing that it was an internal affair. This has received public criticism as Maldivian dignitaries sent Independence Day greetings to India without mentioning the recent conflicts.
Earlier this month, India's government revoked Kashmir's constitutionally granted special status with some autonomy from India, creating separate union territories governed under the Indian government.
Thousands of Muslims have gone out on strike in London against the actions of the Indian government.
