Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) reveals that the newly developed cargo terminal complex project at Velana International Airport (VIA) is reaching completion.
In a tweet MACL stated that the steel structure of the new cargo terminal is almost complete.
MACL said currently work on filling the pillars with concrete and other work are being carried out. Furthermore, work on the roof is also near completion, they said.
The project was contracted to China-based Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) for USD 373 million, equivalent to MVR 5.7 billion. BUCG began work on the project during January this year.
The terminal, which is estimated to be operative during next year, is a 12,000 square meter cargo terminal complex.
According to MACL, a total of 120,000 tonnes of goods can be stored at the complex, which would have the latest technological facilities installed to ease loading and unloading of goods. Currently the cargo terminal can only accommodate 4,000 square meters of cargo at any given time.
