Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof says the government aims to end the discrimination among sports and in this vein, will provide an international coach for chess.
While minister Mahloof made the statement at the opening ceremony of the National Chess Arcade at Hulhumale's Mini Sports Complex, the government had provided an international coach for the Bodybuilding and Physique Sports team as well.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mahloof said there are many promising chess players in the country; hence an international coach would be brought for chess as well. He said the objective is to work together to achieve success and end all discrimination among sports.
Mahloof also mentioned that the government had pledged to end the salary gap for different sports. Thus the salary has now been fixed at MVR 5000 for each athlete as per the first 100-days pledge of the government. He also noted that although chess has been a prominent sport in the country for ages, no specific place has been provided for players to practice, which has now been solved. He also stated that a place was rented to play chess in the past.
The National Chess Arcade was inaugurated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The National Chess Arcade is a designated hall assigned to the Maldives Chess Association by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment in order to provide an arena for chess players in the Maldives.
