Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) announced that eight percent of female prostitutes in Maldives are under the age of 18.
A report sent to the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
(CEDAW) by the HRCM committee of discrimination against women, showed that eight percent of female prostitutes in Maldives are underage, the survey was conducted in 2012. The report also showed that 1,139 females were selling themselves for money in Maldives.
The report highlighted the government’s effort to reduce domestic violence against women. However it also states that the constitution needs to be amended and that difficulties faced when dealing with certain issues.
In its report HRCM stated that the involvements of female participants in national events have increased. Involvement of females in politics has increase and the chances for women to express their opinions have increased from 79 to 80 percent.
