Football Association of Maldives (FAM) on Sunday elected Bassam Adeel Jaleel as its President.
Bassam competed for the post against Ahmed Thariq (Tom) who is the former President of FAM and Member of Parliament for Mahibadhoo constituency.
As per the local football governing body’s charter, one club in the third division, eight clubs in the second division and all the clubs in the first division can vote in the election. Each team can cast two votes and therefore a total of twenty-five votes were cast. Bassam got fourteen votes while Thariq got eleven.
Addressing the congress after being elected, Bassam said he will fulfill his electoral pledges within the next four years.
He said although he was ousted from FAM’s General Secretary post over a no-confidence issue, his election to the post of FAM’s President has revealed that the local football family has faith in him.
Bassam said under his leadership, he would work side-by-side with everyone to promote local football, and assured that FAM will would with the government to implement President Abdulla Yameen’s sports manifesto.
He also vowed to give special attention to the atolls and said although only seventeen clubs get to vote in the FAM congress at present, he would increase the number to forty-two.
The eight members that Bassaam proposed for his steering committee include six parliamentarians. Faresmaathoda MP Mohmamed Latheef and board member of New Radiant SC Aishath Nazima have been proposed as his Vice Presidents. Bassam’s ex-co also include North Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed, Madaveli MP Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Ali, Fuvahmulah MP Ali Shah, Hanimaadhoo MP Hussain Shahudhee and Manager of Maldive Gas Moahmed Shifau.
