Polls to elect a new chairperson for opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been postponed.
The election was earlier scheduled for February 05, 2017. According to MDP, the polls will now open on February 10, 2017.
The party decided to postpone the election as the initially set date was a working day, which could affect the voter turnout. MDP cited, providing the opportunity for as many member as possible to take part in the polls, as the reason for the change.
The position became vacant, when Ali Waheed announced his resignation on November 28, 2016. When opened for nominations, prominent lawyer and former cabinet minister Hassan Latheef was the sole candidate that came forward.
