President Abdulla Yameen’s faction of the divided ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), says it is trying to open a new party office at H. Hurafa.
PPM’s deputy leader and Fonadhoo MP, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, said on Thursday that they are working on opening a new, spacious office, where all the administrative and campaign-related work can be carried out.
He said although they initially planned to open the office on Thursday, due to the changes that needed to be brought to the exterior of the two-story building, the opening was delayed for next week.
PPM’s office was previously located at H. Themaa. However, following a court order handing the party’s reins to President Yameen, the office was evacuated. Yameen faction took the items and equipment inside the office to Dharubaruge.
H. Themaa currently houses the office of PPM’s leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Since PPM split into two factions due to internal conflicts that emerged in mid-2016, Gayoom has withdrawn his support for the government.
