Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, leader of divided Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), wants MP Ibrahim Mohamed Salih as parliament speaker and his son MP Faris Maumoon as deputy speaker, claims MP Riyaz Rasheed.
MP Salih is the leader of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP’s) Parliamentary Group (PG).
MP Rasheed, the deputy leader of PPM’s PG, said this in a tweet.
He said Mr Gayoom, a former president, won’t succeed with the plan no matter how many deals he makes.
Parliament is scheduled to vote on the no-confidence motion against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh on March 27.
The censure motion was presented to parliament with signatures of 26 MPs.
MPs belonging to Jumhooree Party (JP) and MDP backed the motion along with some PPM MPs.
While Faris Maumoon, who is leading the effort to oust Speaker Maseeh, is confident that they will succeed, some pro-government MPs claims that 15 MPs who signed the no-confidence motion are ready to withdraw their signatures.
A no-confidence motion against the Speaker of Parliament requires 42 votes for it pass. However, Speaker Maseeh represents the ruling coalition, which holds parliament majority with 54 out total 85 MPs.
PPM's Parliamentary Group leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said earlier this month that the PG will ensure that the no-confidence vote fails.
