Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) has urged broadcasters to adhere to laws and regulations in covering local council elections.
In a circular issued on Sunday, BroadCom urged TV and radio stations not to air content that can be considered as “anti-campaign”.
The regulator asked stations to give equal air-time to candidates, in accordance with Article 30 of the Elections (General) Act, and not to do anything that could hinder free and fair elections.
Broadcasters were also advised to follow Defamation and Freedom of Expression Act, Broadcasting Act, and code of practice when airing content.
The circular further stated that, adhering to the guideline on airing political content during elections, formulated based on international best practice, will increase public’s faith in the electoral system.
