Social media activist and vocal critic of the current government, Yameen Rasheed, died Sunday morning while receiving treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) following a brutal attack.
Police said 29-year-old Rasheed, who is from S. Feydhoo, was found wounded near the staircase of a house near ‘Bis Buru Park’ in Male’ early Sunday morning.
A reliable source informed VNews that Rasheed had stab wounds on his chest and neck.
He was a social media activist and a blogger, who has been strongly criticizing the Yameen administration.
He is also reportedly a friend of missing Minivan News journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla.
According to Rasheed’s family, the incident has come at a time several death threats against him have been reported to police.
While many, especially the opposition, are shaken by the news of Rasheed’s death, self-exiled former president and leader of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed, expressed grief on twitter and called for an independent investigation into the incident, with international participation.
“A treasured soul has been stolen from us. My prayers are with Yameen’s family and friends. May he rest in peace,” he said in a second tweet.
