The new MVR 5 banknote has been introduced at a ceremony on Wednesday.
Education minister Dr Aishath Shiham and Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Dr Azeema Adam joined the ceremony at Iskandar School.
The new MVR 5 note go into circulation in July.
This note was designed by Abdulla Nashaath, the artist behind the ‘Randhiha Faheh’ note series which has been in circulation since last year.
At the time, MMA had decided to introduce MVR 5 as a coin.
The new MVR 5 note has the same design theme and is the same size as the other notes in the series. It has a rendering of popular Maldivian footballer Ali Ashfaq (Dhangadey) but without his face.
MMA has also announced that they will be introducing a new MVR 2 coin this year.
