Teams participating in the 5th South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Championship, hosted by Maldives, has arrived on Thursday.
The championship, held from May 19 to 23, is competed by India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives. This is the first time an international basketball tournament is being held in the country.
India, Bangladesh and Nepal team arrived on Thursday afternoon while the Sri Lankan team arrive later that night.
The first match of the tournament will feature Bangladesh and Nepal on Friday evening followed by Maldives, India match at night.
Maldives will face Nepal on Saturday in their second match and Bangladesh on Sunday for their third, followed by Maldives, Sri Lanka match on Tuesday.
Mohamed Zilaal was elected the captain of the newly selected squad for the tournament. Many young players were selected for the squad this year.
The organizing committee of the tournament requests all Maldivians to show their support for the team.
The organizing committee formed for the tournament include Sports Corporation board member, and former national football team manager Salsa Ibrahim as the Chairman. The rest of the members are secretary general of Maldives Olympic Committee Ahmed Maruzooz (Marey), the two former vice presidents of Maldives Basketball Association (MBA) Ali Naseer and Abdullah Aamir, former football referee Ali Saleem and sport ministry’s Director General Ahmed Ibrahim.
