Former President Mohamed Nasheed has requested for a meeting with jailed Former Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb, who is serving prison sentences totaling 33 years over terrorism related crimes.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) stated that Adeeb’s family has asked for the party’s help regarding his deteriorating health, and therefore the party’s self-exiled leader Nasheed has requested the home ministry and police service to permit three of his representatives to visit Adeeb.
The representatives are: MDP’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef, MDP’s Vice-President Mohamed Shifaz, and MDP’s PG leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Adeeb’s family has said he is suffering from serious health problems including internal cysts, kidney stones, and glaucoma, which has been left untreated due to the negligence of Correctional Service and the police.
His legal team has said that Adeeb could lose his eye sight, develop cancer, and die in prison.
International human rights organization Amnesty International recently requested the government to allow Adeeb to seek medical treatment abroad.
