In his tweets, Ameen said he has decided to withdraw his support for Gayoom, who he has been backing since 2008, and has decided to back President Yameen in 2018’s presidential race.
He was arrested on January 12 on the allegation of blackmailing a judge, and was released to house arrest on September 26.
The state charged with him unauthorised disclosure of information under article 232 of the Penal Code, obstruction of law enforcement under article 533, and unauthorised obtainment of information under article 233 of the Penal Code.
While the trial was held behind closed doors, hearing have ended.
In a statement released on February 22, Ameen said he was accused of blackmailing someone to gain illicit financial benefits and denied the accusation. The statement also said as police could not get any evidence to back the allegation, they were levelling other allegations against him.
He claimed that he was later being questioned in order to get a statement that would aid police to arrest Gayoom and that he had been warned that if he criticized the government and failed to give such a statement, he would be kept in jail for several days similar to social media activist Ahmed Ashraf (Shumba Gong).
