Former vice president Ahmed Adeeb’s prison cell has been searched on the suspicion that Adeeb has been carrying a phone inside the prison.
Adeeb’s lawyer Moosa Siraj said the cell was searched on Monday night, by a police forensic team that went to Dhoonidhoo from Male’. However, he said a forensic team in Dhoonidhoo used to search prison cells before.
Siraj said despite the search, police could not find anything in Adeeb’s cell.
He also said that due to the increasing concerns from opposition figures and others about Adeeb’s ill health on social media, police have been accusing Adeeb of encouraging people talk about his health.
Expressing anger over the issue on Twitter, Adeeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa said authorities should grant medical release to Adeeb instead of checking who is tweeting about him.
The former VP, who is serving prison sentences totaling 33 years on terrorism and corruption charges, is suffering from glaucoma, internal cysts and kidney stones. However, despite “doctors’ recommendations” government is refusing to grant him medical release to travel overseas stating that he may flee.
The former VP was initially being kept in Maafaushi Prison. However, he was transferred to Dhoonidhoo last year under the home minister’s orders to “increase security”.
