Male City Council has expressed concern over the recent assault hike in the capital, especially targeted at school children.
Speaking at the press conference held by the council, Mayor of Male’ City and former Education Minister Shifa Mohamed said the people want peace to be established within the capital. Hence, meetings were previously held with the police to share the concern of the people due to the increase in assault cases in the capital, Mayor said.
However, the Mayor said, with two school students being attacked within the span of two days, she will meet the authorities and appeal them to be vigilant in investigating these cases and to take better measures to establish safety within the community.
It is extremely important for locals and authorities to come together to create better security measures at schools, Mayor said.
Mayor further said it is incumbent for authorities to monitor and investigate why youngsters are taking part in crimes such as assault. It is important to take necessary steps against those who commit these crimes, as there has been an increase of extremely young offenders.
Noting the surge of traffic jams in the capital, Mayor said while the police are working to solve these issues they cannot do it alone. Hence, the city council is ready to work together with relevant authorities to help solve these problems, Mayor Shifa said.
