Leader of Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim, has called for the immediate release of Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon, saying that he is being detained against the law.
In a tweet on Thursday, Qasim said that Faris is being detained unlawfully, for saying “no” to corruption.
Noting that the MP has spent over six months in arbitrary detention, Qasim called on authorities to immediately release him.
Qasim is among the many political leaders and parliamentarians who have called for Faris’s release.
The MP was arrested on July 18, 2017, on the allegation of bribing fellow parliamentarians in an effort to oust pro-government Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh. The following day police obtained a court order to keep him in detention until the end of his trial.
If found guilty, he will get a prison sentence of up to three years, two months and twelve days, and will subsequently lose his seat.
Faris is also standing trial on identity fraud charge for allegedly using ruling Progressive Party of Maldives’ flag and logo without permission. If found guilty of this, he will get a prison sentence of nine months and eighteen days.
