Maldives Correction Services (MCS) has stated that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, arrested on major allegations, would not be allowed to meet with his lawyers and family members.
Speaking to VNews, Gayoom’s daughter Yumna Maumoon said MCS informed them of their decision not to allow a meeting with Gayoom when they attempted to submit the form for a family meeting. Yumna said while they refused to accept the form, they also did not give say when the form will be accepted.
“They said we cannot meet him as the state of emergency was declared. Neither family nor his legal team were allowed to meet with him. So the lawyers are trying to find a solution to this issue’, Yumna said.
Yumna said Gayoom had been meeting with his family and legal team since his arrest. Police had informed Gayoom to speak in Dhivehi, when he communicated with lawyers in Arabic while in Dhoonidhoo, Yumna said.
Yumna also said that she is concerned about Gayoom’s health as he had a fever when he was transferred to Maafushi Prison during the weekend. Although he was doing better later on, his current situation is not known, which is extremely worrying, Yumna said.
Maumoon Hameed, a member of Gayoom’s legal team and his nephew, also expressed concern over MCS’s decision. Noting that it is a violation of the law, Maumoon Hameed said that MCS informed them they would not be accepting any items brought in by Gayoom’s family either.
Immediately after the 15-day state of emergency was declared, police arrested Gayoom during the late hours of the night, after breaking down the door of his residence.
