Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed’s wife on Sunday.
The family has confirmed that MP Ilham’s wife, Aminath Maasha Hassan was arrested.
Police had initiated a search for the parliament member, publicizing MP Ilham’s photo stating that he is being sought in regard to an investigation.
Police also appealed the public to help search for him when his whereabouts remained unknown.
Police said Ilham is being sought for an investigation carried out by the Economic Crime Department.
Police had previously arrested MP Ilham at Velana International Airport when he returned to the country. However he was released by the Criminal Court the following day.
It is not clear why Ilham’s wife was arrested.
After the declaration of state of emergency by President Yameen, many articles of the constitution were suspended and many politicians and their family members have been arrested by police.
While many described the move as an act by President Yameen to achieve his political agendas, others have stated that arresting the wives and other family members of political members is a vile act carried out by the government.
Police had recently arrested the wife of Justice Ali Hameed and two other family members. They also arrested Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim’s eldest son Ibrahim Siyad Qasim.
